DumaTV

Client: Telekom New Media
Tools: Figma, FigJam
Duration: November 2023 – December 2023, February 2024 – March 2024
Role: UX Designer

DumaTV is the streaming platform for Hungary's largest comedy theatre, DumaSzínház, which provides videos to watch for its users.

Goal

To make the product more modern and usable for its users.

One of my projects at DONE. was to redesign DumaTV's web application and create the design for an upcoming mobile app. My role involved creating low-fidelity wireframes for desktop, mobile and TV.

A mobile application was essential, as 42% of users accessed DumaTV via mobile browsers (as of January 2024).

Problem statement

DumaTV arrived too late to capitalize on the popularity of the platforms.

DumaTV lacked a properly functional website. It didn't have a dedicated landing page, its user flow was inconsistent and it was cluttered with confusing design elements, such as pop-up windows everywhere.

Additionally, the number of users dropped by 34% from November 2023 to January 2024, despite a spike in December 2023 following the launch of a collaboration with Telekom.

Research

I made a competitive analysis to check out what the streaming services offer to their audiences.

Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max and Hayu offered features that DumaTV lacked, such as dedicated pages for shows and the ability to add episodes to lists. Hayu, a reality show streaming service, is DumaTV's closest competitor in Hungary, as its audience size and interests closely align with DumaTV's. Therefore, we needed to analyze its strengths and weaknesses.

Low-fidelity wireframes

The new DumaTV has to follow the big streaming services in a way to reach people with more informative interfaces.

At the client's request, we didn't introduce new features in the first version of the design; we only revamped existing ones. The exception was the landing page which was entirely new. However, the client decided not to use this page.

For the landing page, it was important to highlight the types of shows available on the app. Packages displayed in a table help users select their preferences while the device options showcase the service's availability.

Landing page (Scrapped)

The home page needed to be more structured and organized with a new menu system. Pages no longer appear in pop-up windows.

The hero section features two CTA buttons: the primary one for playing the highlighted show and the secondary one for more information about it.

Users can continue watching their previously viewed videos in the first section, then browse the latest episodes added to the DumaTV library. The most popular episodes are also featured in a section. Finally, they can visit the comedians' subpages.

Home page

Each show now has its own page where users can select episodes by season.

Impact overview

As part of DumaSzínház, DumaTV must also find its audience online.

With the new applications, it's easier for DumaTV to target their audience in the market. DumaTV updates its show collections frequently and its subscription packages offer a wide range of options. By following the latest UX trends, it's safe to say this web application could put DumaTV on the map. Users doesn't need to watch videos through a browser, enhancing their experience with a faster, higher-quality digital product.

The apps could be further enhanced with new features, such as subtitles.
